The Miljödata incident: a wake-up call
At the end of August 2025, the Swedish IT provider Miljödata was hit by a large-scale ransomware attack. Hackers crippled HR and healthcare systems used by more than 200 municipalities and around 25 private companies. The attack resulted in vast amounts of personal data – including names, addresses, phone numbers, and national IDs – being published online. The incident highlights just how fragile our digital infrastructure is when critical systems lack proper protection and traceability.
Why is this a hot topic now?
There are several reasons why cyberthreats are at the top of the agenda today:
- Exponential information growth: The volume of data and digital services is increasing rapidly. A study from Check Point Research shows that Swedish organizations were targeted by 1,819 attacks per week in Q2 2025, a 32% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The figure illustrates how attacks grow in step with digitalization.
- Severe consequences: The Miljödata incident shows that a ransomware attack doesn’t only impact IT – it disrupts critical functions like financial systems and medical records.
- Stricter demands for security and transparency: The public sector must comply with GDPR and the NIS2 directive. Lack of traceability and data sovereignty can result in significant fines and loss of trust.
How to build resilience
To withstand cyberthreats, more is required than traditional security measures. Key principles include:
- Systematic security work – Map assets and vulnerabilities, perform risk analyses, and update continuously. Keep systems and applications patched.
- Traceable incident management – Ensure every incident can be logged, tracked, and investigated. A modern case management system with clear workflows and reporting makes fast response possible.
- Data sovereignty and transparency – Store sensitive data within Sweden or the EU and avoid third-party transfers. This makes it easier to comply with GDPR and to act quickly when incidents occur.
Why Swedish solutions make a difference
Choosing a Swedish system is not just about supporting local providers. By storing data on servers in Sweden, you avoid having sensitive personal data fall under foreign jurisdiction. You gain:
- Full control of your data – No third party can demand access under laws like the U.S. CLOUD Act.
- Simpler compliance – Swedish and EU-based legislation is clearer and easier to adhere to.
- Closer support and shorter delivery chains – Swedish vendors are often more adaptable and can provide rapid support when needed.
Summary
The cyberthreat facing Swedish organizations is both tangible and growing at a rapid pace. The Miljödata attack in August 2025 showed what’s at stake when systems aren’t robust enough. By investing in secure, traceable, and Swedish-developed solutions, organizations can both meet regulatory requirements and build the resilience needed to withstand the surge in cyberattacks.
